Why
do people retire to Mexico? Simple. It has the best weather, rated
2nd in the world, a very low cost of living compared to most other
countries and a quality of life that is hard to find anywhere else.
Climate
Mexico
is a big country with deserts, beaches, mountains, canyons and jungles.
The climate of a particular area is determined by altitude and latitude.
Perhaps the best climate in Mexico, and some say in the world, is
found in and around Guadalajara which has the altitude of Denver
and the latitude of Hawaii. Here in Guadalajara we don't need central
heating or air conditioning. We have a dry season and a wet one.
The rainy season begins in June with the rains usually coming at
night. Mornings are sparkling and fresh. This pattern continues
until late September. Our fall is lovely; the temperatures drop
in December and begin to rise in Jan. to a delightful spring. May
is our hottest month. Then the rains begin and on it goes.
Cost of Living
Do
not be misled by pie-in-the-sky reports that everything is cheaper
south of the border or by books that are out of date. Prices have
risen in Mexico over the past five years. The peso has been stable
at between nine and ten pesos to the dollar for two years. If you
live here and have a dollar-based income your dollars will go farther.
The
cost of living is considerably lower than in most parts of the U.S.
or Canada. For example, no air conditioning or heating is necessary.
Another unbelievable saving is in property taxes, ranging from $50
to $200 U.S. a year. Food, clothing and many day to day items cost
much less than back home. You can live very well on about $1000
to $1500 U.S. a month, depending on your own style of living.
Quality of Life
Is
it safe? Is it healthy? What do you do with your time? These are
questions frequently asked. Disreputable sales people have been
known to say that here there is no crime, no traffic, no pollution,
and “no problemas.” That is simply not true, and one must use common
sense here as anywhere about safety and health. However, single
female friends say they feel safer here than anywhere they have
lived. Excellent doctors, dentists, hospitals and other health services
are available. As for activities, one can be as busy as one wants
to be. Opportunities abound; a portion of the seminar and information
packet presents entertainment and social activity information.
